ApplyIQ
Helping Organizations See What Happens After Training
Most organizations can tell you who completed training. It's much harder to know whether employees are actually using what they learned.
I created ApplyIQ to explore that problem. It's an interactive application prototype that connects employee skill application, manager feedback, and barriers to performance—giving organizations a clearer picture of what happens after a course ends.
Capture application
Employee
Record skill-application attempts, flag whether a real opportunity existed, and see manager feedback and next steps.
Support transfer
Manager
Review team summaries and application records, provide feedback, and spot opportunities for continued coaching.
Understand patterns
Learning & Development
Explore application status by skill, common barriers, and manager observation patterns across the organization.
01
The Challenge
Training completion doesn't tell us much about performance. Employees may finish a course but struggle to apply what they learned because they lack time, opportunities to practice, manager support, or access to the right tools. I wanted to explore how technology could make learning transfer more visible without creating another complicated reporting process.
02
My Role
I conceived the product, researched the problem, mapped the user experience, designed the underlying data structure, and developed an interactive prototype using AI-assisted development tools. The project is part of my doctoral studies, but I approached it as a practical product design challenge rather than simply an academic assignment.
03
Connecting learning to what happens on the job
The solution is organized around three user needs.
01 —Employees
A simple way to document when they've applied a skill, identify what's getting in their way, and reflect on their progress.
02 —Managers
Visibility into how employees are applying new skills, with opportunities to provide feedback, remove barriers, and support continued development.
03 —Organizations
A clearer view of learning application patterns that could help inform training investments and performance support decisions.
04
Designing for real-world use
Three design priorities shaped the prototype.
Keep the experience simple
Make it easy for employees to record meaningful examples of skill application without turning the process into another administrative burden.
Make managers part of the process
Connect learning application with conversations and feedback rather than treating transfer as something employees manage alone.
Look beyond completion
Focus on evidence of application, recurring barriers, and opportunities for improvement instead of relying entirely on course-completion metrics.
05
Outcomes and Current Status
ApplyIQ is a working interactive prototype developed as part of my doctoral studies. The project demonstrates a product concept for connecting learning, manager support, and performance evidence in one experience. It has not been implemented or validated as an enterprise production system, so I am not claiming measured improvements in employee performance or training ROI. The value of the project is in the problem it addresses, the product decisions behind it, and the working experience I developed to explore a potential solution.

What This Demonstrates
- Framing learning transfer as a measurement problem worth solving
- Designing distinct experiences for employees, managers, and L&D
- Distinguishing lack of opportunity from lack of demonstrated skill application
- System and database design for structured application records
- Human-centered product thinking grounded in learning science
- AI-assisted interactive prototyping using Lovable

Explore the Experience
ApplyIQ connects employee skill application, manager coaching, and L&D insight. This L&D trends view shows how individual records add up to patterns, barriers, and observations an organization can act on.
Independent academic prototype. All people, records, and figures are fictional demonstration data, and changes are not saved.
Reflection
“I've spent much of my career designing learning experiences, but I've become increasingly interested in what happens afterward. ApplyIQ gave me an opportunity to explore that question from a product perspective. Instead of creating another training program, I wanted to build something that could help employees and managers have better conversations about applying what people learn.”
